Used to work at high end establishment. Bartender was fired immediately for doing this. This can happen anywhere though. A local brewpub or a chain/fine dining spot.
You won’t believe how many times people requested “Grey Goose” or “Belvedere” vodka from their table only to be served well vodka or Smirnoff/Absolut. (Not knocking Smirnoff or Absolut, both great vodkas , however, not what was requested) and charged for the higher end liquor.
If you’re dining at a table at any restaurant and you can’t see the bar, some places will service you the low end alcohol and charge you for the higher priced liquor.
It has even happened to me when I was sitting at a bar, asked for patron, and given something else.
If you really want to be sure you’re receiving the alcohol that you want, I recommend ordering it yourself at the bar and watching the bartender pour it, then paying there or put it in your tab and tip the bartender.
Not all bartenders do this, however, it does happen more often than you can imagine, especially if you’re far from the bar and mixing it with other items. It’s hard to tell if it’s the liquor you requested if it is being mixed.
