I feel like it was set up to be that way from the very beginning. I think it was a very contradictory nation from the foundation like Founding Fathers owning slaves while thinking it’s wrong.
Poor education.
It’s like a plague. People too intellectually lazy to care about the facts gravitate toward each other and link asses and ankles to form their own information bubbles absent of the real truth and rife with their own truth, either manufactured in their smooth brains or prompted with the help of outside actors (e.g. Russia’s troll farms and propaganda machinery).
Every American who’s gobbled up sensationalist bullshit on social media and passed it around like a hooker at a stag party without bothering to fact check has fallen prey to large-scale manipulation. Worse, it’s contagious, because those bubbles however tenuous as far as real information goes get YUGE and eventually the groupthink overshadows even the faintest desire to know the truth. The fake facts are far more fun, especially when used against people smarter or better informed or less amoral or a combination, than they, with opposing views.
