Storage unit auctions. Everyone and their brother/sister/cousin etc thought they could make a killing after watching Storage Wars or one of the others. What used to be 10-20 people went to 100+. Units that used to sell for $250 were now selling for $1000.
Completely ruined it for me. I just did it as a side thing, mostly looking for tools I wanted, plus I liked looking through peoples shit once I owned it.
Artists doing commissions. Not that the act of freelancing is bad, just that a lot of people took the fun out of their hobby by turning it into a job because it’s become normalized to just eventually do it.
This maybe be super niche, but powerlifting. There’s been an explosion in the sport in recent times which is amazing in a lot of ways. People get stronger, feel more confident, and it’s given a lot of exposure to legitimate lifters, coaches, and trainers. So in general, having people train is definitely a positive.
But, for each legitimate individual are three non legit, product peddling, swindling, fake weight Instagram persona, figures which make the sport of powerlifting look terrible. A fit tea will not contribute to a 2K total yet you’ll find someone who’s jacked out of his or her mind trying to sell it to you claiming otherwise. Because the sport has gained so much exposure and people, in general, want the quick fix, people are willing to buy snake oil.
Also, your coach should have a decent history. Anybody can get a NASM cert. Just because you have a NASM CPT cert doesn’t mean you know how to get someone to a good total in the sport. However, people that don’t know otherwise will gravitate towards the abbreviations after someone’s name looking for guidance instead of looking to the people that have been there and are still there.
Also, sumo is not cheating. I, personally, am a conventional deadlifter. Always have been and always will be. However, there’s nothing in the rule set of the major federations that says you have to pull conventional so it’s not cheating. I hate the sumo pull but don’t hate sumo pullers. If that’s how you pull, do it.
We may look huge, jacked, mean, grizzled, and curse like sailors but the vast majority of powerlifters, even those that don’t compete, are some of the nicest and most down to earth people you’ll meet. Let’s keep it that way.
