Most polices officers in the US have a four year degree in criminology. There’s very few jurisdictions where you can get hired with almost no formal training.
The irony is that the recruits with the highest qualifications go to the places that can afford to pay the highest salaries. And thus poorer areas with higher degrees of crime / violent crime are policed by the least qualified / most understaffed departments.
Police academy in US is 20+ weeks on average. Followed by a year on probation where you undergo field training and monthly evaluation and can be fired at any time without cause.
