Domande di Internet

What do you think is a common trait amongst all posts that reach the top of AskInternet?

They end in a question mark

Open ended, largely apolitical questions that anyone can answer in depth.

  • Closed questions (such as “What is the capitol of France?”) can’t be answered with lots of answers; top answer will be the correct answers, job done move on.

  • Political questions are likely to get downvoted unless they come across as truly neutral. This doesn’t just mean questions about politicians, but also anything that causes a political divide from subjects like abortions, trans rights, religion etc. Divisive topics will not really get upvotes.

  • One word answer questions usually also fall foul. Simply asking “What’s your favourite song?” isn’t going to lead to any interest, people will just post their song, upvote others they like, and then move on.

The topics that take off usually inspire chains of responses on each top level comment, and that encourages people to come back.

The other thing is that a thread has to have an initial interest to be read, and that’s where generalising helps. Asking a question about a specific topic, (e.g. photography), is interesting for people who follow photography, but for people not interested it doesn’t warrant reading or upvoting. This is part of why this subreddit perpetually asks about the sexiest sex ever sexed, because horny people want to read about it.

Hypothetical questions seem to be popular I think. Like ones that make the user decide or choose something after visualizing a scenario.

Open ended questions definitely are up there as well!
