Domande di Internet

Religious people of Internet, why is it common practice to refer to God as a “him” (not to be sexist or whatever), but wouldn’t it make more sense that God is not of either gender?

In Christianity, Jesus is described in the Bible as being male. I think father that was used to describe God in the Bible is used to represent the characteristics of God and not to represent the gender. God is a strong, just, and caring which are considered to be good qualities for bring a Father. God wants the best for us and cares for his creation like a Father would want for his offspring. That is the most likely reason God is called Father and why many people think he is male. Jesus was a male for certain, at least on Earth, but the gender of God is still a big mystery.

In many languages, the male pronouns can also be used as neutral pronouns. Its probably just a direct translation into english

Religion is patriarchal, almost always…

Atheist here but the three main monotheistic religions that have one figure known as “God” (or Yahweh, Allah) are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. All three are closely related, and known as the Abrahamic Faiths. The time of Abraham, women were considered unimportant to the point that they were nearly property. Men were the rulers, kings ruled men, so god must also be a man. Classic patriarchal society.

I asked this is seventh grade Catholic school, my teacher’s response was that He was just the default pronoun in writing, like “mankind”. Don’t know how true that is, but that was the answer I got. Regardless, it’s pretty understood that God isn’t male or female.
