maybe just start with a peach pit to get your sea legs
It’s super concerning to me that most people are just giving recommendations without asking if you’re even ready for a rock in your life.
A rock is a responsibility, not just a cute accessory for your garden or house. Do you have a gardener or landscaper you can have come look at your rock if something goes wrong? Have you saved up an emergency fund for if your rock starts growing moss or gets crushed by a boot? What will you do with your rock when you travel? Your parents and friends might not take well to you just bringing a rock into their home and you need to talk to them about it now or consider changing your lifestyle to accommodate your new friend.
I don’t want to be too pessimistic. You may end up being a wonderful owner, but these are questions you need to ask yourself BEFORE you get a rock. It’s irresponsible otherwise.
Always start with pebbles. Make sure that they are round and smooth. Those ones tend to be friendlier towards strangers.
Rocks are a big step. I suggest starting with a hardented/dried up piece of gum.
