In my schools, the kids that did this were usually poor, dysfunctional/abusive homes, in a shelter, or part of the foster care system. They were also typically the ones asking others for their lunch scraps, a quarter, loose leaf paper. Many of them didn’t graduate high school. I always think about those kids.
