My grandparents were constantly warning us about devil worshipers and evil spirits and demons. Demons and evil spirits can enter your body in a variety of ways, according to them: rock music, R rated movies, books about witches or witchcraft, walking to the store by yourself, talking to boys or hanging out with my cool cousin, Missy. The only way to stave off the devil and his influences was by listening to television preachers, Christian music (but not Christian Rock, because that was just another trick of the devil) and reading Christian books or the Bible. Farm work was another way to keep oneself free of demonic influence as well.

At 33 I don’t know if I’m really old per-se, but former neighbors in childhood would openly rant to anyone who would listen about how interracial marriage was the death of the virtue of our country.
