The answer is yes to both.
I’d say we’re more aware
A few years ago I’d have argued it was exclusively the latter. It’s both, we now live in an age where all the dirty laundry and closet skeletons can be seen in real time, but more than that, all the things that got buried in the various swamps over the years are now coming to a boiling point, we’re learning that ignoring a problem just because we don’t know how to deal with it has consequences down the road
The world is currently facing some new and particularly terrifying global threats. However, our ability to be aware of everyone’s more localized struggles and fears is definitely changing things. We’re an empathetic species.
It’s kind of both.
With the internet, 24 hour news, and so on we’re definitely more aware of what’s going on in the world, but we have some particularly bad global crises that we’re being affected by right now. In particular climate change and global warming.
