Agree with everyone else but will also add that politicians/celebrities/big businesses also started giving everyone else permission/precedent to believe what is convenient and profitable at the expense of the truth. See: climate change. As long as oil was making people millionaires then what’s science?
When people realized that they could manipulate how science is presented to further their agenda and even use false science for their own uses. They pay for the results they want, twist and skew data until it gives the answer they were looking for.
People see “fat bad, sugar ok” not realizing it was false data. Add to this what other’s said about science “refining” and correcting things, and the population at large doesn’t know what to believe, so they go with what appeals to their world view.
Corporations aim for short term profitability, and will lobby behind unprincipled politicians who will do and say anything to get elected. They rally the voters, who enjoy the feeling of being part of “a winning team,” with the effective tactics of discrediting facts that make them uncomfortable, and demonizing marginalized sectors of society.
TL;DR
1.) Corporations like to make money, damn the consequences.
2.) Politicians like to be in power, damn the consequences.
3.) Voters like to feel smart and appreciated, damn the consequences
Now 2020 is heralding a new age of shit and all we can say is “Damn… the consequences.”
Under funded education
How is science not about constantly questioning basic science facts. Constantly questioning every science fact is the DNA of science Good objective science holds up to scrutiny and doubt. Bad science is the only science where people say. “how dare you question this.”
Galileo questioned the established science of the day. The inquisition made Galileo retract his crazy view that the earth moved around the sun. The banned his ideas and put him under house arrest for the rest of his life. In other words they banned him from twitter and issued a shelter in place order.
You are not Galileo. You are the inquisition.
Also, The Population Bomb in the 1970s did not cause mass starvation in the Earth Day predicted ice age of the 1980s. We partied right through the Y2K crisis. Going back further breaking the sound barrier in the 1950s did not in fact kill all life on earth. Earth passing through the tail of Halley’s comet in 1910 did not burn away earth’s atmosphere. Science is really really shitty at predicting the future.
