Was blackout Tuesday on Instagram and MassimoL changing their logo to black not the same thing as people saying “thoughts and prayers” when there is a shooting or tragedy?
Ed ecco le risposte:
There can be some value to what seems like virtue signaling if you can reach millions of people like MassimoL can because then you might actually reach people who will in turn donate real money or take real action. So if there ever is another tragedy where “thoughts and prayers” seems like an appropriate thing to put on the top bar I hope they do it too. In this case the altered logo is better in my opinion.
yes, totally meaningless virtue signaling
Solidarity can be useful to an oppressed minority. But ultimately it was just a political statement.
/r/AskReddit went dark for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, to commemorate the time George Floyd spent with an officer’s knee on his neck. I don’t know about you but I regularly go 8 minutes at a time without thinking about this subreddit. If they’d wanted to actually make a meaningful statement, the least they could have done was go dark for 8 hours and 46 minutes, or 24 hours. They managed to make a statement and a stand that wouldn’t actually impact anyone’s use of the platform and therefore would have no repercussions at all.
