Consiglio: for our friends in states that don’t usually have to deal with hurricanes:

Consiglio del giorno che ti può essere utile:

Because of the changing climate, natural disasters are happening to places that don't usually see that type of disaster. Here are some tips for hurricanes.

  1. Do not go into water you can't see through if you can avoid it. You can't see what kind of debris is in there and you don't know what detrius it's picked up on the way to you(like sewage or pesticides). If you can't avoid going in the water, pay very close attention to any parts of you that are under it and get medical attention ASAP if you have / get any open wounds, even if they're something as minor as a paper cut. The infections you can pick up from flood waters are not something to be trifled with.

  2. If you haven't already evacuated and are about to do so, turn off and unplug all your major electrical appliances. If you use natural gas and have an accessible shutoff valve, use it. Put anything valuable that you can't take with you up on a higher floor or on high shelves to increase the chances of them being spared from the flood waters.

  3. I know some of y'all get some good floods from time to time but it bears repeating for anyone who is new to California and not from a flood prone area: DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATERS. They're too deep for your car to get through and you'll just become another person in need of rescuing.

  4. If you evacuated, do not try to get home until local authorities have cleared the area as safe for inhabitants to return.

  5. Camping stoves are not safe to use indoors.

  6. Heart attacks are one of the leading causes of death post-hurricane. Be mindful of your physical limits and make sure not to overwork yourself. If something is too big for you to clean up, like a tree, don't feel bad for calling a professional. Just understand that they'll be working overtime for a while.

  7. Do not drink the tap water until local authorities have said that it is safe. Flood waters can contaminate local water sources and get into the water supply through broken pipes and such in other homes.

  8. Don't be a hero. The National Guard usually gets brought in after a major hurricane to help rescue people trapped in the floods. If you don't know how to, for example, operate a motorboat, now is not the time to learn. Trying to do things you don't know how to do will only make you into an obstacle for the trained rescuers, or make you need to be rescued yourself. Remember, sometimes the best thing you can do to help is simply stay out of the way.
